Pocket Montreal Evaluation of Communication Manual: A screening tool - PDFDescriptionThe Pocket MEC provides a rapid, reliable assessment of communication abilities in adults with neurological impairments. Developed by Ronelle Hewetson, Petrea Cornwell, Amanda Love, Perrine Ferré and Yves Joanette, this tool is an adaptation of the original Montreal Evaluation of Communication and would suit busy clinical settings. The Pocket MEC may be administered in a face-to-face or online mode and requires 15 – 25 minutes to complete. Results can be compared to norms, in reference to age- and education-level, based on a normative sample of 76 English speaking adults, with validity for clinical populations yet to be established.
The Pocket MEC contains 8 subtests and a communication questionnaire. Subtests consider linguistic (discourse, metaphors, speech act interpretation, syntactic structures and reading), and paralinguistic components of communication (emotional prosody), as well as cognition (verbal fluency, self-appraisal). The complete kit features an easy-to-follow administration manual, response form, a stimulus book and six audio files.
