PDF Version of the Improving First Impressions Manual. Improving First Impressions is an empirically tested manualized program for social skills training. Designed for people with acquired brain damage, this program is based upon a well-established behavioral principle for reinforcing positive social skills. The difference is that this program is designed specifically for people who have poor new learning and difficulties with executive control. Consequently, it is suitable for any client group where the improvement of social skills is an important target but the participants may have cognitive impairment. The structured manual details 12 separate sessions of 1-2 hours in length that are designed to address basic social skills that are important in forming first impressions, such as greetings, starting conversations, changing topics, listening to others. The manual provides step-by-step instructions and is supplemented with detailed handouts to accompany each session.
