Nocebo Hypothesis Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (NH-CBT) for Functional Neurological Symptoms

This full day training workshop will be presented by Dr Matt Richardson

Synopsis of workshop:
Noebo Hypothesis Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (NH-CBT) is the name given to a treatment protocol developed 8 years ago by Dr Matt Richardson, following some successful experimentation with a client with functional neurological symptoms.  The treatment protocol achieved complete or almost complete symptom resolution in 12 of the next 13 patients, usually within 2 weeks.  That case series is now published (in Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapy), and has attracted Health Research Council funding for a randomized controlled trial.  The theoretical basis for the protocol is a radical departure from traditional views of functional symptoms as being the result of repressed intrapsychic conflicts – in fact, during NH-CBT, discussion of emotions is entirely optional.

This workshop will fully prepare attendees to practice NH-CBT, and pilot training suggests that they should be able to get similar success rates

This workshop is suitable for:

Clinical Psychologists, Neuropsychologists, Occupational Therapists, Speech & Language Therapists and Physiotherapists working with people with functional neurological problems.

Learning objectives, participants will:

    • be able to fully practice NH-CBT with people with functional neurological symptoms
    • understand the basic ideas regarding the evidence that functional neurological symptoms are the result of a nocebo effect
    • develop some ideas about how this hypothesis might influence their practice with all patients / clients with neurological damage or disease

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) for Individuals with ABI in Community-based Rehabilitation/Therapeutic Settings

This full day training workshop was presented by Dr Alinka Fisher

      Synopsis of workshop:

Positive behaviour support (PBS) is the recommended framework for addressing challenging behaviours and improving the quality of life of individuals with brain injury, with a number of intervention experiments demonstrating its effectiveness with this population. However, it seems the foundations of PBS are often misunderstood, which could result in interventions that are not consistent with its theory and practices. The purpose of this session is to provide a clear outline of the PBS framework, and discuss this in the context of community-based support following brain injury.

        This workshop is aimed at:

Allied health professionals (e.g., OTs, Speech Pathologists, Psychologists, Developmental Educators, Social Workers), GPs, support staff and families who want to learn more about PBS and its application in community-based rehabilitation/therapeutic settings.

          Learning objectives:

          • To gain a basic understanding of a PBS framework for supporting individuals with ABI
          • To consider the relevance and applications of PBS in community-based rehabilitation/therapeutic settings.
